The III Corps was activated December 18, 1940 and arrived in the European Theater September 15, 1944. Assigned to the US 9th Army, the Corps code was “Century”. Assigned to organize 45 provisional truck companies, these were used as the nucleus for the Red Ball Express. Assigned to the 3rd Army on October 10, the Corps became fully operational on December 8. The Corps earned the nickname “Phantom Corps” during the battle of the bulge because the Germans never knew when or where they would be attacked.
